About Zuzefu

A budgeting app built around the way students actually spend

Zuzefu started in Birmingham in 2017. Our founders were finishing their own degrees at the time and kept running into the same problem: student money does not behave like a monthly salary. Maintenance loans arrive in three lumps, part-time wages vary week to week, and rent takes a large share before anything else is bought.

The budgeting apps available then were designed for people with steady pay cheques. So we built one for term-time life. Today the nine of us look after a mobile application for tracking student expenses, and since launch we have worked with 648 students and completed 1,052 jobs, from first-time setup to budget reviews. Of those students, 177 came back for a second job, which tells us more than any survey would.

Mission and vision

Our mission is simple: help a student see where their money went and what is left before the next loan instalment. Our vision is an app that a student opens for thirty seconds a day, not one that demands an evening of spreadsheet work.

Core values

  • Plain figures. Every total in the app can be traced back to the entries behind it.
  • Privacy first. We do not sell spending data, and we explain what is stored in language a first-year can follow.
  • No pressure. We offer no loans, no credit products and no investment advice, only tracking and planning tools.
  • Quick replies. We answer most requests within one hour during opening times.

Experience and expertise

Over nine years we have refined the app with feedback from students across three districts of Birmingham. That work shaped features such as shared household bills, term-by-term budgets and reminders before rent day. We are open Monday to Friday, 09:30 to 19:00, at 13 Wake Green Road.

Services for tracking student spending

Zuzefu works from Birmingham with students who want a clear view of rent, food, travel and course costs. Each service below lists what is included, how long it takes and what it costs in pounds sterling.

App Setup Session

We install the app on your phone and create your account together. Then we set up currency, the start date of your term and the day your loan or allowance arrives. You choose which bank notifications to link, and we explain what is shared and what stays private. The session ends with your first entry logged and a short written summary of every setting we changed, so you can check it later.

£15 45 minutes, one-off

Monthly Budget Planning

We list your fixed costs first: rent, bills, phone contract and travel pass. What remains is divided into weekly amounts for food, books and social spending. The plan is entered into the app as category limits, with a warning when you reach 80 percent of a limit. You receive a one-page printout of the figures, and we repeat the exercise each term if your income changes.

£25 1 hour, per term

Receipt Scanning Training

Logging purchases by hand is the step most people drop after two weeks. We show you how to photograph a till receipt so the app reads the shop, date and total, and how to correct a misread amount. We also cover cash spending without a receipt, using quick-add buttons for your usual items. Practice uses your own recent purchases, so the habit starts that day.

£12 30 minutes, one-off

Shared Household Costs

Students in a shared flat often lose track of who paid for the broadband or the weekly shop. We create a shared group in the app for up to six housemates and set the split rule for each bill: equal, by room size or by usage. Each person sees their balance. We run one test round with a real bill, so everyone knows how to mark a payment as settled.

£30 1 hour, per household

Spending Report Review

After four weeks of entries, we sit down with your data and read it line by line. The review shows which categories ran over, which weekdays cost most and how many small purchases under £5 added up. We mark three specific changes you can make, such as swapping a daily coffee for a weekly one, and set new limits. You leave with the report exported as a PDF.

£20 45 minutes, per review

Alerts and Reminders

We configure notifications that fit your term calendar. Typical examples are a reminder three days before rent leaves your account, a nudge when your food budget is half used by mid-month, and a note when a subscription renews. You decide the time of day for each alert and how many you receive. Fewer, better-timed alerts are easier to act on, so we keep the list short and review it after two weeks.

£10 20 minutes, one-off

Student Finance Check

This session lines up your maintenance loan instalments, any bursary or part-time wages and your expected costs across the academic year. We place each payment date on the app calendar and show how many weeks each instalment has to cover. We do not give regulated financial advice or recommend products. The aim is a clear picture of timing, so a late payment does not catch you out in the middle of a month.

£22 1 hour, per academic year

Group Workshop for Societies

We run a practical session for university societies, halls of residence or student unions in the Birmingham area. Up to 25 students follow along on their own phones while we cover setup, categories, receipt scanning and weekly review habits. The workshop includes a printed quick-start sheet for each attendee. We bring a laptop and screen cable, and ask the host only for a room with a power socket and a place to sit.

£120 90 minutes, up to 25 people

Services are delivered Monday to Friday, 09:30 to 19:00, at our Birmingham office or online. Prices include VAT. If you are unsure which service suits you, send a request through the contact form and we reply within about one hour on working days.

What students and parents say about Zuzefu

Zuzefu has been used by students in Birmingham since 2017. Below are twelve comments from people who tracked their spending with the app, including a few that mention things they would change.

★★★★★

I used to check my bank balance every few days and still ran out before the end of term. Splitting rent, food and travel into separate categories showed me I was spending £38 a week on takeaways. I cut that in half.

Oliver Bennett

Selly Oak, Birmingham

★★★★★

Easy to set up. Took me about ten minutes. My one complaint is that I could not export the monthly summary to a spreadsheet, so I copy the figures by hand.

Priya Nair

Edgbaston, Birmingham

★★★★★

Good value. The basic features cost me nothing, and the paid plan was cheaper than the one subscription I had been paying for elsewhere.

Callum Hughes

Harborne, Birmingham

★★★★★

I am a parent, and my daughter started university in September. We agreed a monthly budget of £650 and she logs her spending in the app. I see the totals, not every purchase, which suits both of us. It has stopped the awkward Sunday phone calls about money.

Margaret Doyle

Kings Heath, Birmingham

★★★★★

Does what it says. The reminders are useful, but there are too many of them in the first week and I had to turn some off. The category list also felt too long until I hid the ones I never use.

Jamal Whitfield

Moseley, Birmingham

★★★★★

I wrote to support because my loan instalment showed up under the wrong month. Someone replied within the hour, explained how to change the date, and the figures were right again before lunch.

Hannah Pritchard

Bournville, Birmingham

★★★★★

Shared costs are the reason I downloaded it. We are four in a house and the utility bills used to cause arguments. Now each person sees what they owe. I would like to add a housemate without sending an email invitation first.

Tomasz Kowalczyk

Selly Oak, Birmingham

★★★★★

Simple to read. The weekly chart is the only screen I really need.

Aisha Rahman

Edgbaston, Birmingham

★★★★★

I started using it in the second term after running into my overdraft twice. By the end of the term I had a clear picture of where £1,200 had gone. The app does not read bank statements automatically, so I enter things myself, which is a bit of a chore on busy weeks.

Ethan Marsh

Harborne, Birmingham

★★★★★

Saved me from a bad habit. Seeing the weekly total before I pay for something has changed what I buy.

Sophie Calloway

Kings Heath, Birmingham

★★★★★

Fine for tracking, but I wanted to set a separate savings goal for a summer trip and the budget tool treats everything as monthly. I worked around it with a custom category. Support suggested the same thing, so I know I am not missing a feature.

Daniel Okafor

★★★★★

Clear and quick to use at the till. I would like a darker theme for evenings, otherwise no complaints.
